Keto Condensed Milk "Snow Cap"

Aloha and welcome to my little piece of the internet world, where I share keto friendly, sugar free, and low carb recipes inspired by Hawaii’s diverse cuisine. In addition to keto friendly Hawaii recipes, I also share tidbits of my keto journey and feature local businesses that cater to the ketogenic lifestyle. Please be sure to comment below with any recipes you would like for me to recreate and any local businesses that you would like for me to review. This post is all about keto friendly condensed milk! In Hawaii, we call is condensed milk two things – “Snow Cap” for a shave ice topping and “Thai Walls” for extra drizzle/sauce at Starbucks.

Is Sugar Free Shave Ice in Hawaii a Good Keto Option?

Ok, before we dive in the Shave Ice details, lets talk sweeteners! Many years ago when I first lived the keto lifestyle (circa 2005-2010) I used artificial sweeteners then quickly learned how bad they were so I also quickly stopped. I had really bad reactions to Equal that resulted in excruciating migraines. It seemed like my body could tolerate Splenda and Sweet N Low, but I remember eventually having reactions to those brands as well. I then made the switch to natural low carb and sugar free sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit and sometimes, I would also use honey, agave, and coconut palm sugar, etc. Since restarting keto in June 2020, I learned about erythritol and allulose, which are the two main and only sweeteners I use currently. With that said, all of the storefronts that serve sugar free shave ice that I have featured on my blog are sweetened with Splenda. I avoid artificial sweeteners, but I have made exceptions when seeking out sugar free shave ice spots. All of this to say, if you’re interested and don’t mind consuming Splenda for some shave ice, then keep reading. I’m going to share two great sugar free shave ice spots on Oahu in this blog.

My favorite sweeteners are listed here:

Better Foods Allulose

Swerve (Erythritol)

Check out the blog I wrote all about my experience with sweeteners. I also list the brands that I have tried and list them for you to check out for yourself. Click here!

Making My Own Keto Friendly Condense Milk

While in the process of finding sugar free shave ice spots, I decided to make some keto friendly condensed milk to go with our shave ice. I used Myra’s recipe (from Low Carb Love) which I will link here. And I vlogged the experience of making her recipe and vlogged our sugar free shave ice hunt, which I will link here. Making the condensed milk was fun. The taste is great, the only difference with regular condensed milk and this recipe, is that the condensed milk will harden and taken on a waxy texture once it hits the ice. If you can get past that, I think its a great option. Next thing to do is to make my own keto friendly, sugar free, low carb, shave ice syrup!

Sugar Free Shave Ice on Oahu

So far, I have been able to locate two spots on Oahu that have a sugar free shave ice option!

  • Kokonuts in Hawaii Kai
  • A shave ice stand located right outside of the NEX at Pearl Harbor (no military ID needed to access this location and purchase)

Kokonuts in Hawaii Kai is located on the east side of Oahu and the shave ice stand at the NEX at Pearl Harbor is centrally located, so its way easier to access if you live on the west side. Please comment below if you know of any other locations that offer sugar free options!
