I’ve been having so much fun recreating local favorite recipes from Hawaii and turning them into keto friendly options.
Aloha! My name is Tioni and I am from Hawaii! I was born and raised on the Big Island in the little town of Hilo and currently reside on the island of Oahu. I have been living the ketogenic lifestyle since August 2020 and have lost 40+ pounds and counting. Not too bad considering I decided to restart keto right before the holidays! I lived the ketogenic lifestyle once before from 2005 – 2010, so I’ve accumulated some experience through the years. I realized in August 2020 that many keto recipes could very well be Keto Hawaiian recipes! I’ve been having so much fun recreating local favorite recipes and turning them into keto friendly options. During the summer of 2020, I researched sweet alternatives for my grandmother who has type 2 diabetes. I learned that sugar is the culprit of a lot of health issues and diseases and is also one of the major contributors to cancer.
This is so important to me because my mother is an endometrial cancer survivor. After coming to this realization, keto seemed to be the perfect fit for me.
Keto is more than a diet, it’s a lifestyle and Hawaiian Keto Girl has proven to me and my ohana that it is still possible to enjoy ono local food here in Hawaii! Only better because it doesn’t have all the sugar and carbs. I challenged myself to take local favorite recipes from Hawaii and turn them into keto friendly meals. My husband took notice of the ono keto food I was making and decided to join the fun. We have been living the ketogenic lifestyle together since September 2020, and have lost a combination of 70+ pounds so far. We don’t feel deprived while maintaining the keto lifestyle in Hawaii and still get to enjoy really great food, especially local Hawaii food. I have never seen my husband remain so committed to a “diet” before and this not only makes me happy for him, but also motivates me to stay committed to the process as well. I am an island girl with basic cooking knowledge so my recipes are simple and ono! Trust me, I am a self-proclaimed foodie, so please believe me when I say that the recipes I share here are tried, true, and ono!

What is Keto Hawaiian food?
As you can probably tell, the inspiration for this blog is to share local Hawaii recipes that are keto friendly. When thinking about what defines “Keto Hawaiian Food,” I think about the mix plate that you find everywhere in Hawaii. Fun fact: when anyone asks me what my ethnicity is, I often refer to myself as “mix plate” because I, like many Hawaii locals are made up of multiple ethnicities. With that said, I define “Keto Hawaiian Food” as low carb comfort food inspired by the diverse fusion cuisine found in Hawaii. It is a fusion of Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Korean, Filipino, and Puerto Rican cuisine, which together make up the “local food” unique to Hawaii. You will find a variety of keto Hawaiian kine recipes here ranging from keto Hawaiian chicken, keto Hawaiian macaroni salad, keto Hawaiian plate lunch, keto Hawaiian desserts, keto Portuguese bean soup, keto kalbi, keto pork adobo, keto fried tacos, keto broken glass jello, keto ambrosia, keto haupia, keto sherbet, and so much more! The possibilities are endless. And we can’t forget the infamous Hawaii favorite – SPAM. Yes, you will definitely see spam recipes here too!
Keto Desserts in Hawaii
There are so many desserts from Hawaii that really make the best keto desserts ever. I have found sugar free jello to become my saving grace. Check out my youtube channel for local favorite dessert recipes that I have keto-fied, such as Keto Broken Glass Jello, Keto Ambrosia, and more. Follow my instagram for Friday Features where I shout out local businesses that have keto friendly options. With a little research and a few tweaks, anything can be keto.
Is Lau Lau Keto Friendly?
This was a question I often wondered prior to beginning keto. When I committed to the ketogenic lifestyle I ended up asking Google. The answer is YES. It is so keto friendly and also my go-to lunch. I eat lau lau almost every day of the week. It is so simple, so ono, and so filling. If you would like to know more about lau lau, click here. I share lau lau quite a lot on my instagram and have received questions about it, so I thought it would be great idea to include this topic in my introduction.
