Hawaii Keto with a DMV Spin (How to Make Keto Crab Cakes)
If you’re wondering how to make keto crab cakes, then continue reading because I am going to lay it out for you! My blog focuses on Hawaii local keto recipes, but I am making an exception for this recipe! Continue to reading to find out why.
Mambo Sauce, Blue Crab, Crab Cakes…these are some signature dishes of the DMV. My husband, who was born in DC and raised in Maryland, loves, and I mean loves crab cakes. After visiting his hometown and trying the local food, I too came to love crab cakes as well. Crab cakes here in Hawaii are very different from those in the DMV. The main difference is that crab cakes in Hawaii are filled with more breading than actual crab meat. Whereas crab cakes in the DMV are very meaty! I quickly learned that if I did not make it myself, we were not going to have anything close to the crab cakes in the DMV. So, I got to work! I have perfected this recipe through the years and we have enjoyed this for many dinners. I like to think that my recipe is great because my husband, a DC native, has given it his stamp of approval.
When transforming this recipe into a keto friendly version, the greatest feat was finding keto friendly bread crumbs. I searched online for keto friendly bread crumbs but it was either too expensive or going to take over a week to arrive. That’s when the idea of making my own keto breadcrumbs came to mind. Here is the 411:
Find your favorite keto bread, toast it, and crumble it up! Simple! Some articles say that you should allow the toast to rest overnight to allow all the moisture to evaporate. But hey, you should just do as you please! I have been toasting the bread and using it immediately and my recipe comes out great every time. Here is an article that I used as a framework when DIY-ing my own bread crumbs: https://www.mightymrs.com/recipe-items/make-your-own-breadcrumbs-from-toast/ The bread that I consistently find here in Hawaii and is also available on Amazon is: Franz Keto Bread
